Regional and international top executives and industry experts from 23 countries attended the 13th edition of the annual Cement Business & Industry Africa 2017 - Conference and Exhibition.

More than 120 industry specialists attended the event, hosted on October 4th and October 5th  at Hilton Sandton Hotel, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

CBI Africa provided the opportunity to exchange views regarding the latest trends, new technologies, investments and insights in the cement industry in Africa, packed with multiple networking opportunities among African and international guests from France, Germany, India, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Tanzania, Botswana, Ethiopia, Denmark,Turkey, UAE, UK, Egypt, Angola. In this context, the presence of the most important local cement producers, suppliers and industry specialists in Johannesburg set CBI Africa 2017 as the ideal forum for discussing the key burning topics of the cement sector, integrated in a complex program covering technical subjects, business & strategy, and logistics.

Zineb Zeryouhi - Business Development Director of LafargeHolcim Maroc Afrique shared opportunities in “Identifying & Developing new markets & logistic hubs for the future", Ms. Kelley Reynolds-Clausen, Research Manager, Eskom RT&D presented “A revised Coal ash strategy and implementation process for South Africa’s power producer”. Mr. Surendra S. Padayachee, Divisional Director Transport of Dangote shared an interesting perspective of “Development of transport and warehouse infrastructure” and  Mr. Dhiraj Rama, Executive Director, Association of Cementitious Material Producers (ACMP) for South Africa presented the “Cement sectors approach contributing to UN Sustainable development goals”.

From a technical perspective, focusing on cost and productivity optimization, as well as product quality increase, Mr. Guilherme Paiva - Project Manager of Cimenfort presented the “Case study of cement grinding capacity upgrade at Cimenfort – Angola.”. Mr. Moisés R. Nunez – Sales Manager, Cemengal  highlighted “ Modularity - trending topic in the cement industry”, Mr. York Reichardt - Sales Director, KHD Humboldt Wedag  made a “comparison of KHD roller press technology with vertical roller mills for the grinding of cement raw material, cement and slag”, Mr. Jan Schmidt - Area Manager- Gebr Pfeiffer shared the “ Latest experiences with MVR mills for the cement industry”, Mr. Jacques Cato - General Manager - Industrial Air Filtration, Donaldson South Africa presented the perspective of “ Industrial Filtration, Past and Future”. Mr. Mogens Fons Managing Director, Fons Technology shared his expertise about “ Fons data cooler”.

 

Moreover,  Eric Hartmann - Area Sales Manager of Haver & Boecker presented  “ HAVER & BOECKER’s packer of tomorrow, Jens Larsen, Sales Manager, Flsmidth – Grinding technology,  and  Mr. Loic Pottier – Area Sales Manager of Fives shared a new offer in the field of services to cement producers - FCB Nova-Gear®. Highlights on the future cement market and technology  were presented by Jean Bosco – Chief R&D, UltraTech Cement “ Application of Smart and Nanotechnology in Cement and Concrete Materials and the.  Mr. Florin Popovici - Emission Control Engineering Consulting , ECEC Italy Fabric filter fundamentals and optimization of bag houses in cement plants. Day Marume - Sales Manager, FLSmidth Operations  presented “Outsourcing Operation & Maintenance with FLSmidth Improves Results”.

The 2017 edition of CBI Africa reviewed the essential and an exchange of viewpoints among experts were shared through the panel discussion where the major highlights were again the regional challenges such as innovation and evolution. Leaders discussed on how old ways are still the path that many companies go on instead of exploring new opportunities and developments. Others argued that while the technology is progressing not all companies are willing to have the cost of improving old ways.

As a common point and sustained view examples from Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, India and South Africa set the tone and identified courage and new approaches need to be set as a first priority when doing business.  

The event enjoyed numerous off-site discussions among the participants during the coffee breaks and cocktail, in a more relaxed setting, with assistance offered by the organizers for all delegates interested in getting in contact with specific company representatives and arranging post-event meetings.

The 2017 CBI Africa edition reviewed key items that challenge cement market, in an interactive format that encouraged discussions, debates and revealed different approaches and new opportunities for delegates to apply in their businesses.  

The conference continued the CBI Africa Award tradition with  Cimenfort Angola winning for the project presented by Mr. Guilherme Paiva, Project Manage.
